These are the goals of the chief. We need to base objectives and learning goals based on these requirements. We will need to divide the course into sections for each goal. How many weeks does it take to learn each thing? How many sections should each individual goal be divided into? When we get these answers I feel we can more fully form the weekly objectives.
Safe measures when operating the ambulance
Initial assessment of patient’s condition
CPR and defibrillator operation
Incident report filing
I suggest checking these websites out as R&D. It will answer many of our current questions, such as how long the training should be, what the students will be learning and how, and what types of assessments are used to grade the students. http://www.emergencycareny.com/emt_training.html http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Healthcare/EMTs-and-paramedics.htm
In the meantime as a rudimentary outline of objectives:
Week one Objectives- At the end of this week students will be able to identify the items located in the back of the ambulance, what it is used for, how it works, where it is stored and why it is stored there.
Week two Objectives- At the end of this week students will be able to identify the items located in the front cab of the ambulance, what it is used for, how it works, and the importance of the item.
Week Three Objectives- At the end of this week students will be able to take a complete inventory before and after their shift, restocking as needed, cleaning and restocking the vehicle for the next shift, and will be able to complete an exterior inspection to ensure all lights and sirens are functioning properly.
Week Four Objectives- At the end of this week students will be able to complete a change of shift ambulance inspection in order to make certain that the vehicle is prepared and that the outgoing crew has restocked and properly cleaned the vehicle.
Week Five Objective- At the end of this week students will be able to properly assess a patient's condition and to secure patient into the back of the ambulance according to the initial patient assessment.
Week Six Objective-At the end of this week students will be able to perform CPR successfully on a dummy.
Week Seven- At the end of this week students will be able to use a Defib and successfully perform the procedure on a dummy (if this is actually done.)
Week Eight At the end of this week students will be able to file incident reports properly.
Obviously some of these objectives should be spread out over a few weeks or sessions, depending on how many sessions per week we will employ.
Ash
Ash & Group D,
That was a great website that you located on the EMT TrainingCourses. It does help to get an idea on how long the training should be. I think your outline looks pretty good as well! My math may be completely off however if I am correct the website says that each course takes anywhere from 3-5 months depending on the schedule selected. As a baseline, and assuming that the learner takes the courses back to back at 3 month intervals, it would take at least 12 months to complete. Am I thinking correctly?
What are your thoughts on the assessments portion of this training? Should we have assessments after each course followed by one comprehesive assessment or certification at the end or just one? I wanted to get started on the assessments portion and my train of thought is that each course should have an assessment. If we can help a student sooner rather than later on an area they are struggling with, it might be better. They will have plenty of time to perfect it prior to their certifications at the end.
Your thoughts?

Ideas for Learning Goals & Objectives:
Goal - By the conclusion of the Emergency Medical Technician Training, all technicians will be able to demonstrate proper protocol in emergency situations.
Objective - Technician students will identify areas of an ambulance and demonstrate their use.
Objective - Technician students will evaluate and determine the patients status prior to transport.
Objective - Technician students will be able to operate a defibrillator and perform CPR successfully.
Objective - Technician students will be able to prepare and complete incident reports according to procedure.
Carmela
Carmela,
The entire course takes 140 hours or 3-5 months and it includes all of the objectives.
"At the conclusion of the course, the EMT Basic will have demonstrated competency in:
Patient assessment
Trauma care
Managing medical emergencies
Utilizing Basic Life Support equipment
CPR
Hemorrhage control
Fracture and spinal stabilization
Managing environmental emergencies
Emergency childbirth
Use of a semi-automatic defibrillatorEach of our courses involves 140 hours of training. Depending on the course schedule you select, attendance requirements may vary from 33 to 37 sessions, and the total duration of the course may be anywhere from 3 to 5 months."
From the way I read it and looking at the schedule, when they say course they are talking about which schedule you decide to take. There are 8 schedules to choose from.Check out on the site and see the scheduling of the courses and you will see what I mean. As for assessments there should be some sort of assessment at the end of each objective. Obviously there will be some performance and some written and some combined. We can hash that out later. Meanwhile see if you can get access to "Curricula Designed to Meet 21st Century Expectations" by Alma R. Clayton-Pendersen with Nancy O'Neill Association of American Colleges and Universities. Chapter 9 is what you will be looking for in the book titled Educating the Net Generation. We should concentrate on section 9.11 and 9.12 and for assessments look at 9.12 and 9.13. You may be able to find this at www.educase.edu/educatingthenetgen
Also a good text to have in your repertoire is Evaluation Basics by Donald V. McCain. This text gives you all kinds of specifics on writing objectives, McCain also emphasizes that course evaluation needs to be done before, during, and after the design process. In other words, we should be evaluating what we are doing constantly to ensure a successful design. Student assessments should be built off of the course objectives, but we have to evaluate those objectives first. That is what we are doing here this week. This is the first step. Objectives need to be as explicit as possible, easy to understand, and those objectives must be met on the side of the instructor.
The main thing that we need to remember is that we have been hired to do a job. A city has invested money in training and our design MUST without fail deliver a positive ROI. This means that the first step is to set the objectives and evaluate them for clarity, consistency, and flow.

LUCIA's GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This may all be a bit much – but I was on a roll.
I believe these goals and objectives are effective as they explain what the medical technician can do at the end of each topic’s module or learning objective. The 3 learning objectives should help achieve the learning goal per topic. An activity can be created around these objectives. It is clear to the learner what they will be able to do. Each learning objective is made up of a verb, a person and a condition (I hope).
Topic 1 Goal:
When operating the ambulance, the medical technician will be able to apply the correct safety measures.
Learning objective 1
The medical technician will be able to summarize the steps to follow before starting the ambulance
Learning objective 2
The medical technician will be able to summarize the steps to follow when arriving at the patient
Learning objective 3
The medical technician will be able to summarize the steps to follow when the patient is in the ambulance
Topic 2 Goal:
When receiving a patient for the first time, the medical technician will be able to complete a New Patient Assessment form
Learning objective 1
If the patient is unconscious, the medical technician must be able to assess the patient according to the Unconscious Patient procedures
Learning objective 2
If the patient is conscious, the medical technician must be able to assess the patient according to the Conscious Patient procedures
Learning objective 3
The medical technician must be able to explain the reasons for their assessment decision
Topic 3 Goal
When presented with a new patient, the medical technician will be able to perform CPR and operate the defibrillation equipment
Learning objective 1
The medical technician must list the CPR steps to follow and the reasons for each step
Learning objective 2
The medical technician must be able to demonstrate each CPR step in the correct sequence
Learning objective 3
The medical technician must be able to demonstrate correct use of the defibrillation equipment
Topic 4 Goal:
After handing over a patient a medical doctor, the medical technician will be able to complete and retrieve an Incident Report.
Learning objective 1
The medical technician must correctly complete an Incident Report
Learning objective 2
The medical technician must correctly file the Incident Report
Learning objective 3
The medical technician must be able to retrieve an Incident Report from the filing system
Nice job everyone!!!
Susan
Here is my overall goal and the sectional goals. They may look funny, but this is how I learned to write objectives:)
Susan
Overall Course goal –
The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the requirements of the Emergency Medical Technician job.
Objectives -
Given an ambulance, perform safety measures of operation with zero discrepancies
Provided patient, complete initial assessment of patient with zero discrepancies
Utilizing a training AED and a CPR (Annie), perform CPR with zero discrepancies
Given the proper forms, file an incident report with no more than 3 discrepancies.
Mark's Goal and Learning Objectives Pharmaceutical Understanding
Learning Goal
By the end of this block of instruction the learning will demonstrate proper uses of pharmaceutical medication found in the ambulance and questions to ask in order to administer the appropriate kind of medication through the listed objectives:
Objective 1
The student will learn the physical compounds (Chemical make-up) of drugs administered to patients, what they do, and proper dosage.
Objective 2
The student will gain an understanding that justifies instances where certain medications should and should not be used: through indications and contraindications, by what medications the patient is currently taking or has in his/her system, & by what medications counter act the effects of their prescibed medication of current medical conditions
Objective 3
The student will understand dosages allowed, how often to give said dosages and what concern does medical condition, weight or other factors have in prescirbing dosage.
I would also like to note that if this is to be a basic EMT course we are designing - then we should take into account that the national standard for the curriculum is 120 hours broken down into 8 hour blocks of instruction. There are other positions that people train for under EMS, but those training hours vary from the basic (120 hours) to more advanced courses dealing in other areas and responsibilities which can go up to over 1k hours of instruction. I am going to attemption to attach a file that my cousin sent me for our research and referencing in developing this course; it is a handguide that EMT instructors use to set up courses like we are designing. The guide is 141 pages, but don't let that discourage you because I don't we need to read through all of it to get an idea of what we need to do to make this course happen :). Also I am posting a link to a website that will help refer us to other bits of information for our research. Also if we can get together sometime this week or over the weekend (I am free saturday in the late afternoon on into the evening) that would be awesome. I will be working friday 11am to 7pm and on sunday i work 12pm to 12am other than that I am free. Let me know what ya'll think about my goal and objectives and the rest i posted here
Lucia: Goals and Objectives I think are the best to use for the project
This was tricky.
Ashley - I think your objectives are too long. They include more than 1 verb and activity. A designer will not be able to design an activity per objective there, so I think your need to be broken up some more.
Carmela - I think you goal is too vague. It too could be broken up. What is proper protocol? Could this not mean many things to different people? Should we not be more specific here?
Susan - I also think your course goal is too vague. Requirements could mean anything: safety measures, hours of operation, application for leave etc.
Mark - the learners are Medical Technicians - so I do not think they need to know the medical information you are suggesting. Surely that would be for a qualified doctor? Your objectives do not really seem to match the topics suggested by the chief.
Goals I think are good (I don't mean to be modest here):
When operating the ambulance, the medical technician will be able to apply the correct safety measures.
When receiving a patient for the first time, the medical technician will be able to complete a New Patient Assessment form
When presented with a new patient, the medical technician will be able to perform CPR and operate the defibrillation equipment
After handing over a patient a medical doctor, the medical technician will be able to complete and retrieve an Incident Report.
Objectives I think are good:
Technician students will evaluate and determine the patients status prior to transport.
Technician students will be able to operate a defibrilator and perform CPR successfully.
Technician students will be able to prepare and complete incident reports according to procedure
The medical technician will be able to summarize the steps to follow when the patient is in the ambulance
The medical technician must be able to explain the reasons for their assessment decision
The medical technician must be able to demonstrate each CPR step in the correct sequence
The medical technician must be able to demonstrate correct use of the defibrillation equipment
The medical technician must correctly complete an Incident Report
Thanks all
Lucia
Lucia,
Actually the information that inspired my posting comes from my cousin who is not only an EMT, but also an instructor in various courses in EMS. Doctors are not the only medical personnel that need to know the effects and affects of medicines, when to use them and when not to and even what kinds of questions to ask - what conditions that need to be observed to avoid giving medication or dosage. When someone is picked up by an ambulance there is not a doctor in that vehicle - there are EMTs in that vehicle. Besides, I did not read into anything that the projects states that the EMTs having prior medical experience. The project is to give a presentation on how the class would be designed and what information would be provided.
Mark Bullard
I forgot to mention this earlier, but having an understanding of the meds, their physical compounds, when to use them, when not to, and so on falls under Assessment of the Patient's Condition. You would not be able to give proper assessment on a patient's condition without the use of meds and a lack of understanding could make matters worse. - Mark Bullard
Lucia, While my objectives are long they are rudimentary or the beginning of the process to create proper objectives. I feel Carmela did a good job in listing what the goals are, just without the full wording of the objectives. Susan's course goal was right on target. The goal of the course is to introduce the student to the requirements of the Emergency Medical Technician job. The Objectives will specify what the goals are. Mark was also on target. I do not know if you have ever ridden in the back of an ambulance or had a family member who has had to be transported via ambulance, but I would be pretty upset if an EMT who was ignorant of medication interactions killed my mother by giving something to her that reacted badly with the half dozen meds she is on for her heart and diabetes. Mark also has insider information as his cousin is an EMT and I looked up not only the requirements for training in NYC but also national standards. While I appreciate that you put alot of thought into your objective you must understand that we also put thought and research into ours and I do not, for one, appreciate total negativity about the work that we did without a single positive thing to be said.
Now with that said, some of your objectives are good, but you are leaving out the safe operation of the ambulance. We are not talking about a 4 week course. We are planning a 3 to 4 month, 120-140 hour course for people who will essentially have the lives of others in their hands. The problems that I see with your goals and objectives are as follows: Goal 1 is orphaned. I do not see a corresponding objective that will completely fulfill this goal. Objectives 2, 6, and 7 are redundant as well as objectives 3 and 8. The wording in Goal 4 is backwards; the EMT will retrieve and then complete the incident report.
Thank you all for your research and hard work this very stressful week with Blackboard being down and all.
Ashley
I tried to organize the responses a bitJ I took all of the goals and objectives and placed them in the appropriate area. HI Susan
Thanks for putting all these together - I'm sure you're glad this week is almost over. Is this the final list or do we have to select again from this list. Getting confused here as I thought the facilitator had to post the final list by Friday and then we give approval or discuss disagreements.
Thanks,
Lucia
I think that this is a great start to fine tuning the objectives. Everything that everyone listed is something that needs to be in the course. I think that all of the objectives that you organized and listed are needed and I approve the list as our final rough draft. After a little combining and smoothing of the rough edges and we just might have a proper course description! YAY!
Everyone worked hard this week and was probably totally stressed out, if not still, because of blackboard being down.
Ash
Good evening,
I did not post this yesterday because folks were still adding information and making comments. Everyone has had a chance to post their ideas, now decide the ones that you would like to see in the course. I will need to post the final list Sunday evening.
Thanks,
Susan

Those are my ideas . . .
Carmela's Thoughts:
Lucia & Group D:
Lucia, I think you did a great job on the goals! I looked at our final list and I see where you retrieved the goals from and I would have to agree with those.
As far as the learning objectives, here is what I came up with:
1. Students will be able to identify the items located in the back of the ambulance, what it is used for, how it works, where it is stored and why it is stored there.
2. Students will be able to summarize the steps to follow before starting the ambulance, when arriving to the patient, & when the patient is in the ambulance.
3. Students will be able to properly assess a patient's condition and secure patient into the back of the ambulance according to the initial patient assessment.
4. Student will demonstrate proper uses of pharmaceutical medication found in the ambulance and questions to ask in order to administer the appropriate kind of medication.
5. When presented with a new patient, the medical technician will be able to perform CPR and operate the AED.
6. Given sample incident reports, students will be able to determine where errors are & discuss how the form should be completed for said scenario.
These are some thoughts for the revisions....
Please look over,

Ash
Ash & Group D,
That was a great website that you located on the EMT Training Courses.

Mark's Goal and Learning Objectives
Pharmaceutical Understanding

Lucia,
While my objectives are long they are rudimentary or the beginning of the process to create proper objectives.
Please select the goals and objectives that you feel best describe our needed outcome.

Thanks,
Susan

Please look over,
Susan
