Hi Everyone

Welcome to week 3 and Assessments. Good luck for the week ahead.

Mark's Assessment Instruments

My proposal for assessment instruments would be:

  1. CPR practice dummy.

    • This helps students get a hands on experience with perfecting CPR Techniques
    • It can be used to evaluate the students on giving CPR unaided by the instructor
    • The dummy's use can also evaluate how a student handles and cares for the patient.
  2. Audio Visual Equipment
    • Videos of accounts in everyday situations can be use during discussion periods of the class and give insight on the job itself.
    • The videos can also be used to show the "right way and wrong way" to work as an EMT and inspire student led discussions during the viewing of dissemating what is right or wrong with the scenarios

Okay well that is prettymuch what i could come up with at the time as my proposal for some examples of what we could use as assessment instruments for the class we're figuratively presenting to our boss. If anyone would like to expand on mine feel free to do so. I look forward to seeing what they rest of you all come up with :). Have a good day and week with all other assignments!

Carmela's Ideas:

Hi everyone! These are some preliminary thoughts. I will continue to add to it as the week progresses. Hopefully I am on target with these:

1. Online Simulation
  • The creation of an online simulator provides "if, then" scenarios for the students to discuss and walk through. This will assist in ensuring the student understands how to handle specific situations.
2. Props
  • This will allow students to practice reading vitals utilizing props/actual machinery located within the ambulance comfortably and confidently.
  • The instructor can evaluate that the student can operate the oxygen machines, defibrillators, IV’s, etc.

Again, these are just some thoughts. I will continue to perform some research and see what I can come up with. Thanks!

Lucia's Ideas:

Assessment Instruments:

I believe we will need performance based assessments that are used for “testing complex, ‘higher order’ knowledge and skills in the real-world context in which they are actually used” (Smith, p. 112)

1. Create a real world simulation to assess if the learner can apply what was learnt in the course. The simulation can be a role playing environment where a learner has to perform CPR on a dummy. The assessor can use a checklist to see if the learner goes through the correct procedures.

2. To assess the patients condition, I recommend a multiple choice format to test intelligent skills and to assess whether the learner knows the procedures to follow when assessing a patient and what safety measures to follow when operating the ambulance.

3. Short answer questions can be used to determine the learners reasons for making certain decision, such as why the learner administered one medication’ over another, or how they arrived at a specific assessment of the patient.

Smith. Instructional Design, 3rd Edition. John Wiley & Sons.

I agree with Lucia in that we need performance based assessments. There are times here when hospitals are tested using actors who are made all bloody and what-not and EMT's and emergency room personnel are tested on disaster situations.

for the other assessments:

short essay or list for knowing what is in the ambulance: List the items located in the back of the ambulance and state what it is used for. or What items are located in the back of the ambulance, where will you find it, and what is it used for?
Checklist or multiple choice for ambulance inspection: List the parts of the ambulance to be checked at the beginning and end of your shift. In what condition should each part be?
CPR dummy
For defib, check this out...

For drug interaction there should be a list of drugs located on the ambulance and the student should define what medications and other drugs they interact with.

Susan's Thoughts
Subject #1
This should be Observation of On the Job Performance – The instructor must be able to witness the student drive the ambulance to see if safe practices are being met.
Subject #2
The medicine section would need to be Pencil and Paper Assessments This way the students can explain the medicines and how they work. Constructed Answer items w/ necessary reference materials available.
Assessing the patient would be Observation. This process would need to be observed for proper evaluation of the patient.
Subject #3
You would utilize the dummy along with the training AED, and they must be observed as the trainer AED walks the student through the scenario. This is also an Observation evaluation.
Subject #4
Completing the forms would be Pencil and Paper Assessments.

Thanks for your ideas everyone - it seems we are all on the same thought page with this one. I look forward to your final recommended list of assessment instruments, which is due Friday.
Have a good week.
Lucia

Ashley's final recommended list:

1.This should be Observation of On the Job Performance – The instructor must be able to witness the student drive the ambulance to see if safe practices are being met.
2.The medicine section would need to be Pencil and Paper Assessments This way the students can explain the medicines, how they work, and what drugs interact negatively. Assessing the patient would be Observation, using a real world simulation in a constructed "accident or emergency"
3.You would utilize the dummy along with the training AED, and they must be observed as the trainer AED walks the student through the scenario. This is also an Observation evaluation.
4.Completing the forms would be Pencil and Paper Assessments.

Mark's Final Proposal

I would agree like the rest of us there should be some fusion of hands-on activities and, more importantly, performance assessments throughout the presentation. This would be a smart play if this would be a real presentation start a training course under the presumed expectations. With that in mind I propose my final suggestion for assessment instruments for our presentation:

  1. a Pencil-and-Paper Assessment could be used here to evaluate the students' progress through the course; both during and after.
    • Multiple choice questions would be a good example along with
      • Short answer questions to respond and reflect upon scenarios given
      • or Essays which could serve an equal purpose to short answer questions.
  2. Simulation Assessment has some use as well where we could take Lucia's role playing environment as one idea to teach CPR and give IVs (Intravenous Fluids).
    • in addition the students could practice giving IVs on each other with the supervised guidance of an expert allowing for On-the-Job Performance assessment and experience.
    • Carmela's mention of an online simulation presents a good case for further learning and can even help students who would benefit from Directed Learning practices as I am sure all of us can remember.
  3. An Observable Assessment could be used in giving direction through out the course (i.e. driving the vehicles, administering drugs & CPR, giving IVs, etc.) to help keep the students in-line with the parameters of the course, criticize to give helpful and objective responses in discussion, and help students to further understand the importance of what they are learning.

FINAL LIST
Thank you everyone for your input. Here is our final list of Assessment instruments. Please let me know if you have any queries or objections. Thanks

Week Task:
Each assessment instrument should be accompanied by a description of its format and general content, at least one example of an item that would be included within it, and a brief rationale for why it would be effective.

Assessment Instrument
Format
Example
Why Effective?
Pencil and Paper
Multiple Choice
For:
  • ambulance item inspection
  • cpr procedure
  • patient assessment
  • drug choice to administer
To determine whether learner can identify correct answer from a given list. Learner may have to apply a concept or principle to identify the correct answer.

Short Answer
To:
  • respond and reflect to scenarios given.
  • explain the medicines, how they work, and what drugs interact negatively.
  • complete the incident reports
  • list items in the ambulance and their use
To determine the learners' reasons for making a decision. Requires use of intellectual skills and thinking
Observation of On the Job Performance
Simulation
To
  • witness the student driving the ambulance and ensure safe practices are being met
  • witness the CPR and AED procedure with a dummy
Instructor can provide objective feedback, helps clarify learning. Aids instructor as an instructional tool. Learners apply learning during instruction and get immediate feedback.

Role Play
To
  • assess the patient
  • to conduct CPR
Valid and practical tool as it measures what it claims to measure and the assessment is close to real life

Lucia,
Nice list. Good job everybody!
Susan

Hello all,
I read through the comments by Dr B. Here are a few suggestions.
Susan

Assessment updates
Sample question for pencil and paper
What does CAB mean in CPR?
What drug would you administer to a heart attack patient?
What is a known allergic reaction to penicillin?
Simulation
Utilized a checklist for the instructor. The instructor will check off each objective.
Role playing
The “Annie” doll works with the training AED to run the student through different scenarios. This will help the student become more comfortable performing CPR.
